The University of North Carolina Asheville is the state of North Carolina’s designated public liberal arts university and one of the 17 excellent, diverse, and accessible institutions of the UNC System. UNC Asheville’s liberal arts curriculum and approach to teaching and learning emphasize critical thinking, clear and thoughtful expression, undergraduate research, community engagement, and free and open inquiry. Through small class sizes, close collaboration, and high-impact experiences, we are preparing the next generation of leaders and productive citizens to serve North Carolina and the nation.

Dr. Kimberly van Noort

Chancellor

Dr. Kimberly van Noort is UNC Asheville’s Chancellor, bringing over three decades of higher education experience to the role. She previously served as Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Chief Academic Officer for the University of North Carolina System, which she joined in 2016. Prior to joining the UNC System, she was at the University of Texas at Arlington where she served in various roles including Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies, Director of University College, Associate Dean of Liberal Arts, and tenured faculty member in the Department of Modern Languages. Dr. van Noort received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in French from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and earned a Ph.D. in French at Boston University.

Board of Trustees

The UNC Asheville Board of Trustees, and all boards within the state university system, is comprised of 13 trustees. Eight trustees are appointed by the UNC Board of Governors, four appointed by the Speaker and President Pro Tem. The President of the Student Government Association also serves as a trustee and is elected annually among the student body.
