Video Game Design

Learn the fundamentals of game development using industry-standard Unreal Engine software. Playtest games in UNCA’s Esports Center and transform from consumers of video games into creators as you start to think about games from a developer’s perspective.

Registration Details:

  • Learn the fundamentals of developing 3-D environments and games
  • Exposure to games programming using Blueprints in Unreal Engine 5
  • Use of open source industry-level software to develop games
  • Develop a deeper understanding of video game history and context of different types of games
  • Compare the similarities and differences in gameplay mechanics over a variety of styles
  • Analyze how gameplay experiences direct players to learn specific functions and achieve goals
  • Workshops – hands-on making of games using industry-standard software, Unreal Engine
  • Labs – use of the E-Sports Center to play games that pair with the game development modules
  • Free Play time with non-competitive games supplemented by reflection journaling and/or group discussions

Sample Schedule:

Morning

  • 8 a.m. – Breakfast
  • 9 a.m. – Game Development
  • 12 p.m. – Lunch & free time

Afternoon

  • 1 p.m. – Play test games in Esports Center related to the game development topic of the day

Evening

  • 5 p.m. – Dinner
  • 6:30 p.m. – Activities / Recreation / Free Time
    Options could include: sand volleyball, Asheville Tourists game, game night, movie
  • 11 p.m. – Lights out

Meet Your Faculty

Victoria Bradbury

Victoria Bradbury is an artist and researcher working with virtual reality, code, fiber art and physical computing. She is featured on the Radiance VR Blog, co-editor of Art Hack Practice: Critical Intersections of Art, Innovation and the Maker Movement (Routledge 2020), and an Epic MegaGrant recipient. Her work has been shown at IEEE-GEM, xCoAx, the {Re}Happening, Harvestworks, Future Bodies Symposium, The Albright Knox and The New Britain Museum of American Art. Victoria holds a PhD with CRUMB at the University of Sunderland and an MFA from Alfred University. She is Associate Professor and Chair of New Media at UNC Asheville.
